Patriot Pen winners chosen at VFW

Each year the VFW hosts an essay scholarship contest called the Patriot Pen, this year the theme is “Why I Honor the Flag” and Tuesday evening they awarded three local students. The factory had just begun to turn out the big ventilating mine fans. Crawford mine engines, fans, and pumps were shipped all over the United States and to foreign countries. The men in the photo sported handle bar moustaches, whiskers, galluses, neck bands and fireman’s double-breasted shirts, and “Plug Katy” hats, which were quite the style for dress or work...
