John David Zuel, 70, life-long resident of Brazil, Indiana passed away at Franciscan Health, in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 7, 2024 following a lengthy illness.

John was born on January 16, 1954, in Brazil, the son of Raymond Claud and Betty June (Slavens) Zuel. He graduated from Van Buren High School with the class of 1972 where he was a member of their basketball team. John worked for the Putnamville Correctional Facility and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department for a short time before beginning his career with the Brazil Police Department in 1983. John retired from the police department in 2004 after serving in each position, including Chief of Police for 6 years.

John has served on the Housing Authority board of directors as a Resident Commissioner since 2016. John’s love and devotion for the Brazil community has been centermost in his life.

He was a past member of the Masonic Lodge and the Zorah Shrine and a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

He especially enjoyed fishing, playing cards, watching the Indianapolis Colts Andy Griffith Shows, Blues Brother’s, John Wayne movies, going on country drives and out-to-eat with his friend Mike.

John was preceded in death by his parents as well as his siblings: Richard Dee Zuel, Sharon Lee Zuel, and James Joseph Zuel.

John is survived by his sister Carolyn J. Donovan and husband Tim of Forsyth, Missouri; nieces and nephews: Christopher Kelly (Allison) of Cape Patterson, Melbourne, Australia, Lisa Kelly (Shane) Tasmania, Australia, Dr. Brian Zuel (Kate) of West Lafayette, IN, Megan Zuel Dunn (Bryan) of Cory, Indiana; Timmy Zuel; sister-in-law Faye Zuel; dear friends: Mike Ferry, Darry Parr, Larry Pierce, Kenny Michael, Chrystal and Ryan Aker, Chrissy Lawson, and Chris Hayes as well as so many other friends dear to John.

Special thanks to many who have helped John through his illness including: the staff at Davita Dialysis, in Brazil, Cloverleaf Health Care, St. Francis Hospital, Union Hospital, St. Vincent Clay Hospital, countless medics and firemen, Dr. Jeevan, Dr. Webb, Dr. Jabour, Dr. Mendoza, Dr. Yee, Dr. Zorn, Dr. Osmond, and friends at the Brazil Housing Authority.

Visitation will be at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave. Brazil, Indiana 47834, on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, from 11:00 until 1:00 PM. Services will follow at 1:00 PM with burial to be held at Summit Lawn Cemetery.
