COLLEGE REPORT: Sampson records first career collegiate sack

Braxton Sampson

During his four-year high school football career at Northview, Braxton Sampson was the leader of the defense in the middle of the field at his linebacker position.

Sampson recorded one sack during his senior year in 2021.

He matched that in Indiana State University’s 27-24 loss to Houston Christian University on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Sampson recorded his first-career collegiate sack, bringing down HCU quarterback CJ Rogers for a 16-yard loss on 3rd down in the fourth quarter, giving the Sycamore offense the ball back with an opportunity to tie or take the lead.

The redshirt sophomore added an assisted tackle to his total on Saturday, bringing him to six tackles – two of which have gone for a loss of yardage – on the season.

Sampson was one of several former Clay City and Northview standouts to put together noteworthy performances recently. The others are below:

Kaylee Lowe (SMWC women’s soccer)

Kaylee Lowe and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women’s soccer team took on DePauw University and Oakland City University recently. Lowe started both games, playing an average of 87.5 minutes. Saint Mary’s owns a 1-5-2 record and visits the University of Rio Grande on Thursday.

Raelee Everhart (SMWC women’s soccer)

Raelee Everhart and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women’s soccer team took on DePauw University and Oakland City University recently. Everhart appeared in both games, playing an average of 52.5 minutes. The junior midfielder recorded two shots and one shot on goal in the pair of losses. Saint Mary’s owns a 1-5-2 record and visits the University of Rio Grande on Thursday.

Kambree James (SMWC women’s soccer)

Kambree James and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women’s soccer team took on DePauw University and Oakland City University recently. James appeared in both games, playing an average of 14 minutes. Saint Mary’s owns a 1-5-2 record and visits the University of Rio Grande on Thursday.

Kassidy Kellett (Lee University women’s soccer)

Kassidy Kellett and the Lee University women’s soccer team took on Auburn University at Montgomery over the weekend. In the 1-0 win, Kellett, who was in the starting lineup, played 53 minutes. The senior forward recorded two shots and one shot on goal. Lee University owns a 2-2-3 record and plays Spring Hill College on Friday.

Chase Nuckols (SMWC men’s golf)

Chase Nuckols and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men’s golf team competed in the NAIA Midwest Invitational held at TPC Deere Run Golf Course in Silvis, Illinois recently. There, Nuckols carded respective rounds of 79 and 84, giving him a total of 163, putting him in a tie for 69th place. Saint Mary’s played in the River States Conference Tournament on Monday and Tuesday.

Brevin Cooper (SMWC men’s golf)

Brevin Cooper and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men’s golf team competed in the NAIA Midwest Invitational held at TPC Deere Run Golf Course in Silvis, Illinois recently. There, Cooper carded respective rounds of 82 and 83, giving him a total of 165, putting him in a tie for 80th place. Saint Mary’s played in the River States Conference Tournament on Monday and Tuesday.

Hunter Martin (SMWC men’s golf)

Hunter Martin and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men’s golf team competed in the NAIA Midwest Invitational held at TPC Deere Run Golf Course in Silvis, Illinois recently. There, Martin carded respective rounds of 85 and 83, giving him a total of 168, putting him in a tie for 95th place. Saint Mary’s played in the River States Conference Tournament on Monday and Tuesday.

Justin Hopkins (SMWC men’s golf)

Justin Hopkins and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men’s golf team competed in the NAIA Midwest Invitational held at TPC Deere Run Golf Course in Silvis, Illinois recently. There, Hopkins carded respective rounds of 82 and 91, giving him a total of 173, putting him in a tie for 106th place. Saint Mary’s played in the River States Conference Tournament on Monday and Tuesday.

Tori Schopmeyer (SMWC volleyball)

Tori Schopmeyer and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods volleyball team took on Oakland City University, Indiana University at Columbus and Indiana University Southeast recently. Schopmeyer appeared in all three matches, playing 11 sets. The senior outside hitter recorded 30 kills and 12 digs. Saint Mary’s owns an 18-3 record and visits Defiance College on Friday for a doubleheader.

Audrey Lee (SMWC volleyball)

Audrey Lee and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods volleyball team took on Oakland City University, Indiana University at Columbus and Indiana University Southeast recently. Lee appeared in two of the three matches, playing seven sets. The freshman outside hitter recorded two aces and one dig. Saint Mary’s owns an 18-3 record and visits Defiance College on Friday for a doubleheader.

Faith Tooloose (Lincoln Trail volleyball)

Faith Tooloose and the Lincoln Trail College volleyball team took on Shawnee Community College over the weekend. Tooloose appeared in the win, playing one set. The freshman defensive specialist recorded four digs. Lincoln Trail owns a 10-6 record and plays Frontier Community College, Southwestern Illinois College and Kaskaskia College this week.
