BARBARA FERRY Brazil,IN

Thursday, September 7, 2023

Barbara Ferry, 89 of Brazil, joined Heaven’s Choir on September 5 with her family and friends by her side. She was born June 19, 1934 to Fred and Lucille (Harris) Burk. Barbara graduated in Frankfort, Indiana and earned an Honorary Degree from the Frankfort Bible College. Always an independent woman, her working career began with RR Donnelley in Terre Haute. She later worked for First Bank & Trust in numerous positions until her retirement.

On May 27th, 1966 she married James R. Ferry. Together through thick and thin including multiple fights against cancer, they were married until his death in 2015.

At a very young age, Barb discovered a love of music and singing with her family. In the past, she participated in Clay County Community Theater, Choir and a traveling ladies trio. A member of the Brazil Nazarene Church she was part of the praise team and loved performing solos on Sundays.

Barb believed the secret to staying healthy was being active, even when she didn’t feel like it.

In her retirement, the “Gray Squirrel” refused to slow down. Barb could always be counted on to lend her time to help out. Whether it was helping children with the 3-4-5 program, fixing dinner for the Youth for Christ group or other events, Barb was there.

Her busy social calendar included get-togethers with the Banking Ladies, the Over 50s group and “crafternoons” with Jana and other friends.

Gardening was another activity that was more than a hobby. Barb often said “I worked out a lot of stress and problems getting my hands dirty in that garden.” In her late 80’s, Barb finally gave up gardening for a new hobby, the auction. She loved to attend the produce auction and try to get the best price and winning bid. Of course once she had won, she shared most of the bounty with family and friends.

She loved the time that she was able to spend with her family. Whether it was traveling and seeing new places, shopping with her daughter or teaching cooking secrets to her son in law, Barb was never one to say no to a new adventure.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Fred Jr., her first husband Harry Howard and her husband James. Barb is survived by her Daughter Jana Trusler (Brad), Brother in Law Ron Ferry and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins her devoted cat Biscuit and a huge church family.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, September 11th, at the Brazil Church of the Nazarene. The celebration will begin at 6pm with visitation prior to the service from 4pm to 6pm.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations in Barb’s name be made to the Brazil Church of the Nazarene.
